New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing these treatments need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
