Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
